Embrace the Unsophisticated: Simple Pleasures and a Refreshing Spritzer Recipe

Life doesn’t always have to be about polished perfection or elaborate presentations. For some of us, true comfort and joy are found in simplicity, authenticity, and a welcoming atmosphere that prioritizes connection over formality. This ethos defines my home and my approach to entertaining, where the most cherished moments often unfold without a hint of pretension.

My philosophy on living is profoundly uncomplicated. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, traditional registries for silverware, fine china, or other conventional “grown-up” essentials were simply not on our radar. In fact, I’m not entirely sure we registered for anything at all. My enduring belief has always been that if you have a collection of sturdy canning jars, you’re well-equipped for most of life’s needs. Plates and proper cups, while certainly appealing, often strike me as lovely but ultimately optional.

Should you decide to grace my home with your presence, prepare for an experience that deviates from the typical formal dining setup. You might very well find yourself nestled comfortably on a soft blanket in the yard, casually balancing a plate on your knee, rather than gathered around a meticulously set table with matching service. Indeed, the likelihood of this scenario unfolding is exceptionally high. And even if we do find ourselves at a table, it’s a near certainty that your plate and mine will delightfully clash in style and pattern. Our utensils – forks, spoons, and knives – are likely to bear the charming marks of a well-used life, and there might even be a chip or two adorning your bowl. But let me assure you, what you’ll find in abundance here is genuine warmth and an unparalleled welcome.

My Grandpa, a man of simple wisdom, often shared a timeless adage: “You can put lipstick on a pig and it’s still a pig.” I find myself applying this straightforward truth to nearly every aspect of my life. I am, unapologetically, who I am. And what I am is absolutely thrilled to share my space and time with you, even if I remain, at heart, a humble piglet. I am perfectly content with this identity. Our home, a vibrant and wonderfully chaotic haven, is overflowing with the joyous energy of boys, the clucking of chickens, the playful barks of dogs, the quacking of ducks, the purrs of cats, an eclectic collection of musical instruments, an assortment of tools, various intriguing widgets, meticulously crafted paper Viking ships, and countless books. It’s wonderfully wacky, perhaps even a bit eccentric, but above all, it’s authentically us!

The Quest for Simple Summer Refreshment

As the warmer months arrive, my approach to summer beverages mirrors my general disposition: it’s refreshingly simplistic, or perhaps just plain simple, depending on your perspective. My primary desire is for something that offers immediate refreshment and can be prepared with effortless speed. The ideal summer drink for me is one I can whip up in mere moments, just in time to settle onto the porch. From this vantage point, I love to watch the children as they weave joyful circles on their bikes around the driveway, all while the sky transforms with the mesmerizing hues of a setting sun. Crucially, this concoction must be easily assembled in a jar – a nod to my beloved canning jar philosophy – and it absolutely cannot be anything overly potent. You see, dear friends, you’re looking at a true lightweight here!

If your sensibilities lean towards the supremely elegant and sophisticated, you might consider diverting your gaze for a brief moment. However, if you, like me, appreciate understated charm and genuine ease, then I have precisely the libation for you. Prepare yourselves for a revelation: it’s a mixed drink that requires only three common ingredients (gasp!), is served over ice (oh, the horror of such casualness!), and demands about as much effort to prepare as applying a quick coat of lipstick. Whether you identify as a pig or not, this is definitely a reason to celebrate. Party time, indeed!

This delightful drink is effervescent, wonderfully fresh, remarkably light, perfectly icy cold, and quintessentially simple. With summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to embrace such straightforward pleasures. So, come on over! I’d be absolutely delighted to whip one up for you. It will, almost certainly, be served in a jar. Is that perfectly alright with you?

Ingredients

  • Crushed or cubed ice (plenty for a tall glass)
  • 3 tablespoons plum wine (adds a touch of sweet fruitiness)
  • 4 ounces (or 1/2 cup) Pinot Grigio or any semi-dry to dry white wine (for a crisp foundation)
  • Chilled plain seltzer water (to add effervescence and lightness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Glass: Select a tall glass, ideally with a capacity of at least 10 ounces. Fill it generously to the brim with your choice of crushed or cubed ice. The more ice, the longer your drink stays refreshingly cold.
  2. Add the Wines: Carefully pour the plum wine over the ice, allowing its rich color to swirl. Next, add the Pinot Grigio (or your chosen white wine) into the glass. The layers will start to mingle subtly.
  3. Top with Seltzer: Fill the remaining space in your glass with chilled plain seltzer water. Pour gently to preserve the bubbles. Allow the seltzer water to settle for a few moments, giving the ingredients a chance to combine naturally.
  4. Gentle Stir & Serve: For a quick mix, give the drink a gentle stir. A chopstick works wonderfully for this, or if you happen to be better stocked with bar tools than I am, a swizzle stick will do the trick.
  5. Sip and Enjoy: Take a deep breath, find your favorite spot, and sip happily! This simple spritzer is designed for maximum enjoyment with minimal fuss.

Tips for Your Unsophisticated Spritzer

  • Garnish with Ease: While true unsophistication dictates no garnish, a thin slice of lemon, lime, or even a few berries can add a pop of color and extra freshness without being fussy.
  • Chill Everything: For the best results, ensure all your liquid ingredients – especially the seltzer water and white wine – are thoroughly chilled before mixing.
  • Experiment with Wines: Don’t feel confined to Pinot Grigio. Any dry or semi-dry white wine you enjoy will work beautifully. For the plum wine, explore different brands to find your favorite balance of sweetness and fruit.
  • Make it a Pitcher: If serving a small group, you can scale this recipe up. Mix the wines in a pitcher, then pour over ice in individual glasses and top with seltzer just before serving to maintain effervescence.
  • Non-Alcoholic Option: For a delightful non-alcoholic version, replace the plum wine with a splash of cranberry or cherry juice, and the Pinot Grigio with a non-alcoholic white wine alternative or simply more seltzer with a dash of white grape juice.

Perfect Pairings for Casual Enjoyment

This spritzer is the ideal companion for light, casual fare. Think fresh fruit platters, a simple cheese and cracker board, or perhaps some homemade bruschetta. It also pairs wonderfully with grilled chicken or fish, especially on a warm evening. Its lightness means it won’t overpower delicate flavors, making it a versatile choice for any relaxed gathering.
