Baking with Heart: Supporting Cookies for Kids’ Cancer at the Houghton Arts & Crafts Fair
Last week, I found myself nestled in the bustling basement of the student center at Houghton College in Houghton, New York, a proud vendor at the 26th Annual Houghton Arts & Crafts Fair. This year marked an exciting expansion for the college, featuring two floors of talented artisans and entrepreneurs. My presence wasn’t just about sharing delicious treats; it was driven by a profound mission: to bake and sell as many goodies as my kitchen could produce, with every penny benefiting the incredible Cookies for Kids’ Cancer organization.
Participating in this event was an opportunity to channel my passion for baking into a tangible act of charity, supporting families facing the daunting challenge of pediatric cancer. The energy of the fair, combined with the warmth of the Houghton community, created the perfect backdrop for a bake sale with a purpose. Each cookie, each square of caramel corn, and every cup of hot chocolate on a stick wasn’t just a sweet indulgence; it was a beacon of hope, a step towards a cure, and a testament to the power of collective giving.
The Inspiring Story Behind Cookies for Kids’ Cancer
Before delving into the details of the bake sale, it’s crucial to highlight the extraordinary mission of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. This remarkable organization was born from the heartbreaking yet incredibly inspiring journey of a mother whose two-and-a-half-year-old son bravely battled pediatric cancer. She transformed what is arguably any parent’s worst nightmare into a powerful movement, dedicating herself to helping other families navigating similar struggles. Their dedication shines a light on the urgent need for increased awareness and funding for childhood cancer research.
It’s vital to understand the gravity of pediatric cancer. Here are some critical statistics that underscore why organizations like Cookies for Kids’ Cancer are so essential:
- Cancer tragically claims the lives of more children annually than any other disease, surpassing the combined mortality rates of asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS.
- Approximately 46 children receive a cancer diagnosis every single day, leading to nearly 13,000 new cases each year across the nation.
- While cure rates have seen dramatic improvements, thanks to groundbreaking advances in childhood cancer research, which has also provided seminal insights into cancer in general, today, 4 out of 5 children diagnosed with cancer can be cured. This progress is a testament to dedicated research and support.
- Despite the devastating impact of pediatric cancers, combined funding for all childhood cancers accounts for less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s total cancer funding budget. This stark reality emphasizes the critical need for grassroots efforts and community support to bridge this significant funding gap and accelerate life-saving research.

A Sweet Partnership: GLAD Products and Our Charitable Bake Sale
The opportunity to participate in the arts & crafts fair came together quite rapidly, leaving me with limited time to recruit a team of friends and family to donate baked goods. However, I wasn’t about to let this deter me from seizing the chance to make a significant impact. My ongoing partnership with the esteemed GLAD Product Company presented a unique and incredibly generous opportunity: GLAD pledged to donate up to $1.00 for every single cookie or goody I sold, with a potential total contribution of up to $100,000. This phenomenal commitment transformed a simple bake sale into a powerful fundraising endeavor, amplifying every effort.
Knowing that reaching one hundred thousand cookies was an ambitious, perhaps even impossible, dream for a single kitchen, I nevertheless kicked my culinary operations into overdrive. My goal was simple: produce as much high-quality, irresistible baked goods as humanly possible within the timeframe. The first day’s offerings were ambitious: a monstrously huge batch of Chex mix, meticulously crafted from three boxes of cereal, a generous bag of pretzels, a mega-box of Goldfish crackers, three-quarters of a pound of butter, and an assortment of other savory bits. Alongside this, I prepared a quadruple batch of luscious salted caramel corn and a substantial amount of homemade instant vanilla chai mix. I carefully packed these delights and transported them to the fair on Tuesday, harboring a quiet hope that I might sell out before the six o’clock closing time, allowing me to return home with ample daylight to prepare more for the following day.

Overwhelming Success: Stories from the Fair
My initial hopes for Tuesday were dramatically surpassed. By two o’clock in the afternoon, my table was completely cleared out – every single item sold! This overwhelmingly pleasant surprise ignited a renewed determination. The boys and I immediately headed home, energized and ready to create something even more spectacular for day two. The second night was a flurry of activity, resulting in forty-eight decadent Hot Chocolates on a Stick, four distinct batches of homemade marshmallows (featuring Bourbon Vanilla, rich Coffee, bright Orange Vanilla, and refreshing Mint flavors), another enormous roaster pan of the popular Chex mix, and four additional batches of kettle corn (two classic sweet and salty, and two with a spicy-sweet chipotle kick). It was an exhilarating, albeit exhausting, production!
Wednesday morning was a whirlwind of bagging, labeling, and last-minute preparations. With a quick brush through my hair and a dash of makeup (applied hopefully in the right places!), I had everything meticulously arranged on my table, ready for sales to commence promptly at ten in the morning. My silent prayer was that, once again, I would manage to sell most of what I had brought. I had even promised the kids they could feast on any unsold items, a promise I was secretly hoping I wouldn’t have to keep.

The generosity of the Houghton students and community members from the surrounding county was truly awe-inspiring. They demonstrated an incredible capacity for charitable giving, once again clearing my entire table by two o’clock. The response was not just financially impactful; it was deeply moving. One particular encounter stands out vividly. A young student approached my table, listening attentively and sweetly to my heartfelt spiel about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. Then, with a quiet resolve, she opened her wallet, placed its contents into the donation jar, and simply stated, “I am cancer. I survived.” That powerful declaration, delivered with such grace, brought tears to my eyes, melting away any carefully applied makeup as I thanked her, profoundly touched by her courage and generosity. In total, I was humbled to have sold two hundred and fifty items at that incredible sale.
