Irresistible Cheeseburger Bites: The Ultimate Game Day Appetizer
There’s an undeniable truth in every home where good food and good company gather: finger foods are the undisputed champions of any party. They vanish quicker than a magic trick, leaving behind only crumbs and happy memories. Anything that’s bite-sized, easy to hold, or simply pops into your mouth without fuss is guaranteed to be a hit. Whether it’s on a stick, nestled in a small cup, or just perfectly portioned, these little culinary treasures make entertaining effortless and enjoyable.
As the biggest snack-food holiday of the year—Super Sunday, or any major game day—looms large, I always find myself meticulously planning the perfect menu to keep my football-loving crew well-fed and joyful, regardless of the game’s outcome. The excitement of the sport is always elevated by an incredible spread of appetizers, and the right dishes can turn a regular gathering into a memorable celebration.
Our game day traditions include a few cherished recipes that are non-negotiable, like classic chicken wings, savory soft pretzel-wrapped smoked sausages, and our creamy dill pickle dip. These staples form the backbone of our spread, bringing comfort and familiarity. However, each year, we eagerly introduce one or two exciting new recipes to keep things fresh and delightful. This season, the shining star addition to our lineup is the incredible Cheeseburger Bites, inspired by the simple, crowd-pleasing selections from the Land O’Lakes Big Game Recipe Collection. These bites encapsulate everything we love about game day food: convenience, classic flavor, and sheer deliciousness.
My first encounter with these particular Cheeseburger Bites was quite memorable. I initially prepared them to have on hand for a live webinar I co-hosted with Amber from the Land O’Lakes test kitchen. Keeping one’s energy up while engaging with a virtual room full of fabulous bloggers is crucial, right? I might be Rebecca, and I might be a stress eater, but these bites proved to be much more than just a quick energy boost; they were an instant sensation.
The moment these delightful bites hit the counter, it was as if a siren song had gone out to the smallest members of my household. Five little men appeared as if by magic, surrounding me with their characteristic barrage of questions: “What’s that?”, “Is that meat?”, “Can I eat one?”, “Can I eat four?”, “Can I eat all of them?” Their eyes, wide with anticipation, made it clear that these weren’t just snacks; they were culinary gold.

Before I could even register what was happening, three-quarters of the platter had vanished. The sheer speed at which they disappeared was testament to their irresistible appeal. I was left with only a precious handful of the Cheeseburger Bites and a comforting bowlful of dark chocolate chunks and pretzels in my lap, which, I must admit, felt like a meager consolation prize after witnessing such a delightful food frenzy. Poor me, indeed!
Why Cheeseburger Bites Are Your Game Day MVP
These Cheeseburger Bites aren’t just a snack; they’re a party in every mouthful. Imagine the classic taste of a juicy cheeseburger, perfectly miniaturized and served in a crispy wonton cup. This innovative twist offers all the savory goodness without the mess of a traditional burger. They are incredibly easy to pick up, pop into your mouth, and enjoy while still keeping one eye on the game. The crispy texture of the wonton shell contrasts beautifully with the warm, savory, and cheesy beef filling, creating a symphony of flavors and textures that will have everyone reaching for more.
Beyond their delightful taste, these bites are also incredibly practical for entertaining. They can be prepared in advance, making game day hosting less stressful. Their individual portions mean no slicing or extra plates are needed, allowing your guests to mingle and enjoy the festivities freely. Plus, they appeal to all ages – from the pickiest eaters to the most seasoned foodies, everyone loves a good cheeseburger, especially when it’s this cute and convenient.

Crispy, simple wonton cups filled with a rich, melty, and incredibly cheesy cheeseburger filling. These delightful bites are garnished with fresh chopped pickles and a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds, creating the perfect Super Bowl or any game day treat that will impress all your guests. This recipe is ever so gently adapted from and with thanks to the Land O’Lakes Test Kitchen recipe, ensuring reliable and delicious results.
Ingredients
- 36-48 wonton wrappers, trimmed to 3-inch squares
- Nonstick cooking spray
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup finely minced or grated onion
- 1 clove of garlic (or 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder), peeled and minced or pressed
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, preferably freshly ground
- 1 cup finely chopped dill pickles, divided
- 1/2 cup milk
- 14 slices Land O Lakes Deli American cheese
- Toasted sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Position an oven rack in the middle of the oven to ensure even baking.
-
Lightly spray mini-muffin pans with non-stick cooking spray, making sure each cup is coated. Carefully press one trimmed wonton square into each muffin cup, gently shaping it to form a cup.
-
Place the prepared muffin pan in the center of the preheated oven rack. Bake for 5-10 minutes. Watch them very carefully, as wonton wrappers are thin and can burn quickly. You want them to be lightly golden and crisp.
-
Immediately remove the wonton cups from the oven and turn them out onto a cooling rack to cool completely. As they cool and crisp up, shift your attention to preparing the flavorful filling.
-
In a small frying or sauté pan, add the finely minced onion, minced garlic (or garlic powder), and freshly ground black pepper. Use your hands to break up the lean ground beef directly over the onion mixture in the pan. Cook over medium heat, continually breaking the beef into very small, fine pieces with a sturdy spoon until it is fully cooked through and beautifully browned.
-
Once the beef is browned, tear the slices of Land O Lakes Deli American cheese into smaller pieces and add them to the pan along with the milk. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the cheese is completely melted and the mixture transforms into a creamy, luscious consistency. At this stage, if you have guests who are not fans of pickles, you can remove a portion of the cheesy beef mixture for them. To the remaining mixture, stir in about 1/2 cup of the finely chopped dill pickles until well combined.
-
Generously spoon the warm, cheesy beef and pickle mixture into the cooled, crispy wonton cups. Garnish each bite with the remaining chopped pickles and a delightful sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds for an authentic cheeseburger touch.
-
Serve these delectable Cheeseburger Bites immediately to enjoy their warmth and crispy texture at their best.
Notes
I introduced a few minor adjustments to the original Land O’Lakes Test Kitchen recipe to perfectly align with our family’s preferences, and these tweaks truly enhanced the overall flavor profile. Instead of the suggested lettuce garnish, we opted for additional chopped dill pickles, which add a fantastic salty crunch and tang that complements the rich beef and cheese. Because of this added salty component, I found it unnecessary to include any additional salt in the recipe, ensuring a balanced taste. Furthermore, I deliberately increased the amount of cheese, because, let’s be honest, can you ever go wrong with more cheese in a cheeseburger? The extra melty Land O Lakes Deli American cheese makes these bites even more decadent and satisfying. Finally, for no reason other than my personal love for a hint of garlic and a robust belt of black pepper in my cheeseburgers, I added a clove of minced garlic and increased the black pepper. These subtle changes elevate the flavor to a new level, and our family absolutely adored the result!

Hosting Super Sunday Like a Pro: Tips for the Ultimate Game Day Party
Successfully hosting a Super Sunday bash, or any major game day gathering, is all about strategic planning and a fantastic food spread. Beyond just great recipes like our Cheeseburger Bites, consider these tips to make your party unforgettable:
- Variety is Key: Offer a mix of textures and flavors. Balance savory items like these bites with something fresh (like a veggie platter) and something sweet. Think about different dietary needs too, if applicable.
- Prep Ahead: Many appetizers, including the wonton cups for these Cheeseburger Bites, can be partially prepared the day before. This significantly reduces stress on game day itself, allowing you to actually enjoy the company and the game.
- Beverage Station: Set up a dedicated drink station with a variety of options—sodas, water, beer, and perhaps a signature cocktail. This keeps traffic out of the kitchen and makes it easy for guests to help themselves.
- Comfortable Seating & Viewing: Ensure there are enough comfortable spots for everyone to relax and get a good view of the screen. Extra pillows and blankets can add to the cozy atmosphere.
- Interactive Elements: Besides the game, consider having some board games, card games, or even a football pool to keep guests engaged during halftime or commercial breaks.
- Easy Cleanup: Use disposable plates and cutlery if you want to minimize dishwashing. Have plenty of trash cans readily available to encourage guests to clean up after themselves.
By incorporating these tips, alongside a show-stopping recipe like our Cheeseburger Bites, you’re guaranteed to host a game day party that’s as smooth and enjoyable as it is delicious.
