Today’s Pizza Dip recipe is brought to you in partnership with Cabot Cheese Cooperative. My passion for their premium cheeses makes this collaboration a genuine delight, and as always, all opinions and photography are my own.
There’s a special time of year when the craving for warm, comforting dishes takes over – we affectionately call it “comfort food season.” This period, spanning from the crisp days of fall through the heart of winter, is perfectly suited for hearty, soul-satisfying meals that bring people together. It’s when ovens work overtime, filling homes with tantalizing aromas, and every gathering calls for something undeniably delicious.
This glorious Pizza Dip is the epitome of comfort food, offering all the beloved flavors of a classic pizza without the crust. Imagine layers of rich tomato sauce, an abundance of gooey, melted cheese, and savory pepperoni, all baked until bubbling and golden in a hot skillet. It’s an irresistible, cheesy, and deeply satisfying appetizer that promises pure indulgence with every scoop.

Why Pizza Dip is Your Next Go-To Appetizer
Pizza dip is more than just a deconstructed pizza; it’s a versatile and crowd-pleasing dish perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re hosting a game day party, planning a cozy family movie night, or simply seeking a quick and easy snack, this dip delivers big on flavor with minimal effort. Its communal nature encourages sharing and conversation, making it an ideal centerpiece for any social gathering.
Unlike traditional pizza, which can be messy to eat, pizza dip offers a fork-and-dipper experience that’s delightfully interactive. It’s also incredibly customizable, allowing you to tailor the ingredients to your taste preferences or dietary needs. Plus, the absence of a crust means you can enjoy the concentrated flavors of your favorite pizza toppings and cheeses without feeling overly full.
Choosing the Perfect Cheese Blend for Your Dip
The secret to an exceptional pizza dip lies in the cheese. For a truly outstanding result, I highly recommend Cabot’s Rustic Pizza Shredded Cheese. This premium, natural blend perfectly combines the sharp, tangy flavor of cheddar with the incredible melt and stretch of part-skim mozzarella. It’s conveniently pre-shredded, saving you time without compromising on quality or flavor, ensuring that signature creamy, melty cheese pull every time.
If you’re having trouble finding Cabot’s excellent line of shredded cheeses, you can certainly ask your local grocer to stock it. As an alternative, you can create your own blend by using one cup each of shredded part-skim mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese. This combination mimics the flavor profile and melting characteristics of Cabot’s blend, giving you a dip that is both savory and wonderfully gooey. Experimenting with other cheeses like provolone, Monterey Jack, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan on top can also elevate the dip’s complexity and texture.

Customizing Your Ultimate Pizza Dip
The beauty of pizza dip lies in its adaptability. While the classic combination of cheese, sauce, and pepperoni is always a hit, don’t hesitate to get creative with your additions:
- Sauce: The quality of your pizza sauce makes a huge difference. Choose a brand you love, or better yet, try making your own! A homemade slow-cooker pizza sauce offers depth of flavor, but many excellent store-bought options are available, such as this popular brand. Consider adding a pinch of dried oregano, basil, or a crushed garlic clove to your sauce for an extra layer of flavor.
- Toppings: Go beyond pepperoni! Add finely crumbled cooked sausage, sautéed mushrooms, sliced black olives, diced bell peppers, or caramelized onions. For a bit of heat, sprinkle on some sliced jalapeños or red pepper flakes. Fresh basil added after baking can provide a vibrant finishing touch. Remember to pre-cook any meats or vegetables that release a lot of moisture to prevent a watery dip.
- Cream Cheese Base: The softened cream cheese base provides a luxurious creaminess and helps hold all the delicious ingredients together. Feel free to use light cream cheese or Neufchâtel cheese if you prefer a slightly lighter option without sacrificing texture.

Cooking Your Pizza Dip: Oven, Skillet, or Slow Cooker?
The versatility of pizza dip extends to its cooking methods. You have several excellent choices, each offering slightly different benefits for your convenience and presentation:
Traditional Oven Baking
Baking your pizza dip in the oven is the most common and arguably the best method for achieving that perfectly bubbly, golden-brown crust on top. I love preparing this recipe in a large 10-12 inch cast-iron skillet or an 8-inch baking dish. The cast iron skillet is fantastic for even heat distribution and retains warmth beautifully, keeping your dip hot longer. Just ensure your skillet has an oven-safe handle to avoid any unfortunate melting incidents.
For smaller gatherings or individual portions, you can divide the ingredients between two smaller cast-iron skillets or ramekins. This can be a fun way to serve guests, allowing everyone their own personal, bubbling dish of cheesy goodness. The baking time remains largely the same, but keep an eye on smaller dishes as they may cook a bit faster.
Effortless Slow Cooker Pizza Dip
Great news for slow-cooker enthusiasts! This dip adapts beautifully to a slow cooker, making it an excellent option for potlucks, parties, or extended serving times. For the best results, use a small 1.5 to 2.5-quart slow cooker. While it won’t fill a larger slow cooker, it will melt into a lovely, gooey consistency just as it would in the oven.
To prepare in a slow cooker, simply layer the ingredients as directed in the recipe instructions at the bottom of this article. Cover the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for approximately 1 hour, or until the cheese is thoroughly melted and bubbly. Once melted, switch your slow cooker to the LOW setting to keep the dip warm and perfectly dippable throughout your event. This method is fantastic for hands-off cooking and ensuring your dip stays hot for hours.

Crustless Pizza: A Delightful Dip, Not a Sliceable Pie
While often dubbed “crustless pizza,” it’s essential to understand that this dish is designed to be a dip, not a sliceable pie. It embodies all the glorious, melted, gooey components of your favorite pizza toppings, minus the often cumbersome crust. This means it’s meant for scooping, spreading, and dunking – a delightful textural experience that traditional pizza can’t quite offer in the same way.
If you’re seeking a low-carb option, this dip is incredibly versatile. It pairs wonderfully with crunchy celery sticks – a classic accompaniment for many dips – or even with refreshing baby carrots. These healthy dippers provide a satisfying crunch that beautifully complements the rich, cheesy dip without adding extra carbs, making it a guilt-free pleasure for those watching their intake.
What to Serve with Your Hot Cheese Dip
The fun of pizza dip really comes alive with the right dippers and accompaniments. Here are some fantastic suggestions to complete your spread:
Perfect Dippers
- Pita Bread and Chips: My absolute favorite dipper is toasted pita wedges or pesto pita chips. They are wonderfully sturdy, capable of holding up to the generous scoops of melted cheese, and the pesto adds a delightful aromatic touch that naturally complements pizza flavors.
- Crusty Breads: Slices of crusty bread, such as a fresh baguette, focaccia, or this delicious braided semolina bread, are perfect for spreading the warm dip. You can also explore a whole page of bread recipes for more inspiration.
- Tortilla Chips and Crackers: Sturdy tortilla chips are a classic choice. Avoid thin potato chips, as they tend to break under the dip’s weight. Good quality crackers, especially those with a subtle herb flavor, also work beautifully.
- Vegetables for Low-Carb Options: For a healthier or low-carb approach, serve with crisp celery sticks, vibrant bell pepper strips (red, yellow, or green), cucumber slices, or baby carrots. They provide a refreshing contrast to the rich dip.
- Garlic Knots or Breadsticks: These soft, flavorful bread options are fantastic for soaking up every last bit of cheesy goodness.
Refreshing Beverages to Pair
No delicious spread is complete without the perfect drinks. For a festive touch, consider these delightful Berry Kombucha Margaritas or a refreshing Hard Cider Sangria. Another excellent choice is the Mixed Berry Sangria-by-the-Glass, perfect for individual servings. For non-alcoholic options, sparkling cider, iced tea, or even a simple fizzy water with lemon are great choices.
Sweet Endings: Dessert Companions
After a savory, cheesy dip, a touch of sweetness is always welcome. This Maple Apple Upside Down Skillet Cake offers warm, fruity comfort. For something rich and decadent, try Mounds Rice Pudding or the classic Old Fashioned Double Chocolate Mocha Pudding. And for a seasonal treat, Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream makes an amazing addition to any fall or winter feast.

Best Easy Pizza Dip
Author: Rebecca Lindamood
Pizza Dip (a.k.a. Crustless Pizza) is cheese, sauce, and zesty pepperoni baked together until warm and bubbly for the ultimate comfort food.
Serve with toasted pita wedges, crusty bread, or with celery sticks and carrots for a low carb option.
Equipment
- Cast Iron Frying Pan (or 8-inch baking dish)
Ingredients (Serves 6)
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (light cream cheese/Neufchâtel cheese can also be used)
- 2 cups shredded pizza blend cheese (approximately 8 ounces, by weight)
- 1 cup pizza sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)
- 10 slices pepperoni, cut into quarters
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread the softened cream cheese evenly over the bottom of a 12-inch cast-iron skillet or an 8-inch baking dish. Alternatively, divide and spread evenly between two small cast-iron skillets for individual servings.
- Top the cream cheese layer with half of the shredded pizza blend cheese.
- Dollop the pizza sauce over the cheese layer, spreading it gently.
- Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese over the sauce.
- Scatter the quartered pepperoni slices evenly over the top of the dip.
- Bake for 25 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted, bubbling vigorously around the edges, and lightly browned.
- Allow the pizza dip to stand for 5 minutes before serving. This helps it set slightly and prevents immediate scalding.
