Unveiling the Unexpected: My Journey into Amish Country and a Recipe for Irresistible Seasoned Snack Crackers

My relocation to Amish country several years ago was an experience filled with eye-opening surprises, not least of which was the profound realization of how remarkably normal the Amish people I encountered truly were. My preconceived notions, shaped perhaps by historical narratives or popular culture, led me to expect a quaint, almost theatrical adherence to an “olde English” dialect—perhaps a smattering of “thees” and “thous” sprinkled throughout their conversations. I certainly didn’t anticipate strolling through the vibrant local farmer’s market and witnessing a middle-aged Amish woman, her face alight with hearty laughter, confidently balancing a slice of pizza in one hand and a 20-ounce Pepsi in the other, all while tending to her bustling bake stand. It was a delightful, yet jarring, image that immediately began to reshape my understanding of this unique community. For clarity, it’s quite ironic, given my initial assumptions, that the Amish themselves often refer to anyone outside their community as “English,” not because of a shared historical linguistic style, but simply as a distinction.

Another significant revelation, and one that further challenged the mental images I had inadvertently constructed, was the pragmatic integration of store-bought ingredients into their cooking and baking. My romanticized vision had been of a community where every culinary creation was meticulously crafted entirely from scratch, a testament to self-sufficiency. While it’s undeniably true that Amish households typically prepare a far greater proportion of their meals from raw ingredients than the average “English” family, they are by no means averse to embracing the convenience of pre-made items. Instead, they possess an admirable knack for taking a simple store-bought product and, through their culinary expertise, transforming it into something truly extraordinary and uniquely their own.

This culinary philosophy beautifully manifests in the story of Ada and Anna, two wonderful friends from the community who had, for months, been extolling the virtues of their signature seasoned snack crackers. They assured me these crispy delights were perfect for casual snacking, but also highlighted their versatility as a flavorful addition to salads, or as an ideal accompaniment to hearty soups and robust chilis. Each time they spoke of them, a wave of disappointment would wash over me, as they inevitably reported having just devoured the last batch, leaving not even a solitary crumb for me to sample. These women, I’ve come to learn, are remarkably efficient in the kitchen! Consequently, I would invariably find myself returning home, sans sample, pondering the elusive nature of these much-hyped crackers. It finally dawned on all of us that the simplest solution was for them to just share the recipe. In a mere moment, they jotted down the details on a card, handing it to me with the confident assurance that it was an incredibly straightforward process, requiring just four basic ingredients.

Upon reviewing the recipe, I discovered I already had everything required stocked in my pantry: a box of classic saltines, a generous portion of cheddar cheese powder (the secret to their vibrant orange hue), a container of sour cream and onion powder, and a staple like canola or vegetable oil. Eager to try this promised simple marvel, I immediately set to work. A mere twenty minutes later, the tantalizing aroma of baking crackers filled my kitchen as I pulled two half-sheet pans from the oven, laden with appealing, golden-brown seasoned snack crackers. They were perfectly crispy and exuded an irresistible fragrance that, almost instantly, drew my children into the kitchen. My kids, experts in the art of the swift grab, quickly honed in on the warm crackers, plucking them from the hot pans and tossing them from hand to hand in an effort to cool them down for immediate consumption.

The kitchen was soon alive with the joyous sounds of chattering and giggling, followed by the first tentative nibbles. And then? A profound silence descended, broken only by the rhythmic symphony of crunching. When a momentary lull occurred in the children’s enthusiastic assault on the pans, my husband and I seized the opportunity to dive in for our own taste. These crackers were truly remarkable—like an elevated, homemade version of beloved commercial favorites such as giant Goldfish, Cheese-Its, or Cheese Nips. They were, in a word, GOOD. The children, ever innovative, soon began experimenting, layering paper-thin slices of ham onto the savory crackers, creating delightful mini-sandwiches. In what felt like an astonishingly short period, the entire batch was “el gone-o,” and a chorus of small voices began to clamor for “more!”

Since that memorable day, these seasoned snack crackers have become a cherished staple in our household, appearing, on average, once a week. We keep a small bowl readily accessible for spontaneous snacking, while the remainder is carefully stored away for the versatile uses Ada and Anna initially recommended. They serve beautifully as crunchy croutons, enhance the flavor and texture of salads, and, most importantly, stand as the ultimate accompaniment to a warm bowl of soup or a fiery chili. There truly is nothing quite like these robustly flavored crackers for dunking into a rich tomato soup or a five-alarm chili, adding a satisfying crunch and an explosion of savory flavor to every bite.

Transform ordinary saltines into extraordinary, savory snack crackers reminiscent of Goldfish and Cheese-Its in just 10 minutes. Perfect for snacking, soup, chili, or salad toppers!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound box of saltines (Low or no-salt versions are recommended, as the powders add sufficient saltiness.)
  • 1 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 1/4 cup sour cream and onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons cheddar cheese powder

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Prepare two rimmed half-sheet pans for baking.
  • Gently open all the sleeves of saltines and place them into a large mixing bowl. In a separate measuring cup, whisk together the vegetable or canola oil, sour cream and onion powder, and cheddar cheese powder until you achieve a smooth, well-combined mixture. Drizzle this flavorful oil mixture evenly over the crackers in the bowl. Using your hands, carefully toss the crackers to ensure they are thoroughly and evenly coated with the seasoning.
  • Divide the seasoned crackers between the two prepared sheet pans. Use your hands to gently spread them out into a single, thin layer as much as possible to ensure even baking. Place both pans into the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the crackers feel mostly dry to the touch, stirring them two or three times throughout the baking process to prevent sticking and promote uniform crispness.
  • Once baked, remove the trays from the oven and allow the crackers to cool completely on the pans. This is crucial for them to achieve maximum crispness. Once cooled, transfer them to an airtight container for storage. When stored correctly, these delicious seasoned crackers can maintain their freshness and crunch for approximately two weeks. Should they begin to lose their crispness over time, simply return them to a 250°F (120°C) oven for about 5 minutes to revive their texture.
