I am thrilled to partner with Princess Cruises for this comprehensive guide on “What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise Vacation.” All photos and opinions remain – unless otherwise specified – as always, my own.

Your Essential Guide to Stress-Free Caribbean Cruise Packing
Embarking on a Caribbean cruise is an exhilarating prospect, promising sun-drenched days, vibrant port adventures, and indulgent evenings. However, the excitement can often be overshadowed by the daunting question: “What should I pack for a Caribbean cruise?” My first cruise packing experience was a chaotic endeavor, driven by a fear of forgetting something vital. I crammed my suitcase with every conceivable item, resulting in a monstrously heavy bag that I cursed with every step from my doorstep to the check-in counter.
That initial journey taught me a valuable lesson. By the time I reached my cabin, I was utterly exhausted and immediately booked a much-needed massage at the onboard Lotus Spa. Since then, after numerous cruises, I’ve honed the art of efficient packing. I’ve discovered what truly matters and what you can confidently leave at home, freeing up precious luggage space for the delectable treats and unique souvenirs you’ll undoubtedly acquire in port – I’m talking about you, Coffee Jelly! Remember, while you shouldn’t fret too much over forgotten items (most things are available on board or in port), one non-negotiable essential is your necessary medications.
To help you avoid my early packing pitfalls, I’ve curated a handy, printable packing list at the end of this post. It’s designed to take all the guesswork and worry out of preparing for your unforgettable Caribbean cruise vacation.

Clothing and Footwear: Mastering Versatility for Your Caribbean Cruise
When planning your wardrobe for a Caribbean cruise, versatility should be your guiding principle. The key is to pack items that can be layered or mixed and matched to suit various activities and temperatures. Even in the tropics, evenings can bring a cool breeze, and ship interiors are often air-conditioned.
Daytime Casual & Shore Excursion Wear
- Layering Pieces: For a typical seven-day cruise, I recommend packing a few t-shirt dresses paired with a couple of sets of leggings. These leggings are incredibly versatile; they can be worn independently for a gym session or under your t-shirt dresses for cooler evenings.
- Everyday Staples: A pair of comfortable jeans is always a good idea, as are dedicated hiking pants if you plan on active shore excursions like nature walks or exploring ruins. A casual skirt can be easily dressed up or down with different tops.
- Versatile Tops: Pack a selection of nicer t-shirts, tank tops, or tunics that can transition from daytime exploration to a casual dinner. Don’t forget a sweatshirt or a light sweater – vital for chilly evenings on deck or inside the air-conditioned ship.
- Swimwear: This is a non-negotiable for a Caribbean cruise! I always pack at least two swimsuits. This allows one to dry after a swim, a helmet dive in Cozumel, or a snorkeling adventure, while you wear the other. Having two also means you can reserve your favorite or “nicer” swimsuit for relaxing moments at exclusive areas like The Sanctuary Adults Only Retreat. Don’t forget a few light swimsuit cover-ups that can double as casual daytime wear.
- Activewear: Beyond leggings, consider a pair of shorts and a couple of athletic tops if you plan to utilize the ship’s gym facilities or participate in active shore excursions.

Evening Attire & Formal Nights
A seven-day Caribbean cruise typically features two formal nights. While these are not mandatory, they offer a wonderful opportunity to dress up and enjoy a more elegant dining experience. Princess Cruises encourages guests to embrace the occasion, whether that means a cocktail dress or a smart casual ensemble.
- Dining Room Dress Codes: If you plan to dine in the main dining rooms or specialty restaurants like Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria or The Crown Grill (both offer incredible, intimate dining experiences for a low per-person charge of $25), you’ll want an outfit you’d wear to a nice restaurant at home.
- Formal Wear Options: You can certainly wear the same outfit for both formal nights if you prefer. However, I enjoy dressing up, so I usually pack a couple of cute dresses (perhaps with a petticoat for added flair) or dress slacks paired with a nice top. (You can explore cute dresses and petticoats here!)
- Photo Opportunities: Formal nights are also when ship photographers are stationed at various scenic locations, offering professional portrait sessions. These photos can capture memorable moments – one of our formal night photos of my husband was so impressive it became his new LinkedIn profile picture!

Footwear for Every Occasion
Choosing the right shoes is crucial for comfort and safety on a cruise ship. High heels, while fashionable, are impractical and even dangerous on a ship, especially in unsteady seas.
- Walking & Excursion Shoes: Comfortable sandals like Tevas or Birkenstocks are excellent choices for walking-intensive excursions. Sneakers are a must for any on-foot excursions, the gym, or active pursuits.
- Casual Deck Shoes: A pair of flip-flops or water shoes is perfect for lounging by the pool or navigating wet decks.
- Evening Shoes: For formal nights, opt for flats, dressy sandals, or low wedge heels. These offer elegance without compromising stability.
Undergarments & Comfort Essentials
- Don’t forget pajamas, socks, and underthings! Socks are especially important if you plan on any hiking or long walking excursions, providing much-needed comfort and blister prevention.
- Laundry Facilities: Remember that Princess Cruises provides convenient laundry facilities on board. This means you don’t need to pack an outfit for every single day. If you happen to forget something, the ship’s shops or port vendors are likely to have what you need.
Toiletries and Personal Care: Balancing Convenience with Personal Preference
When it comes to toiletries, Princess Cruises makes it easy by providing basic amenities in your stateroom. However, there are a few items you’ll definitely want to bring from home.
Provided & Optional Items
- Stateroom Amenities: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion are all provided in your cabin. If you have specific brand preferences or sensitive skin, feel free to pack your own, but if you’re aiming to pack light, these are items you can confidently leave at home.
- Skincare & Spa Services: While you can pack your daily skincare regimen, the Lotus Spa on board offers a full range of facials and Elemis skincare products. Purchasing items from the spa often comes with coupon codes for online refills at a discount. Similarly, there’s no need to pack nail polish or remover, as the full-service beauty salon provides manicures and pedicures. Men aren’t left out either, with a range of services including ultra-luxury shaves.
Essential Toiletries to Pack
- Prescription Medications: Absolutely vital. Pack enough for your entire trip, plus a few extra days, and keep them in your carry-on bag.
- Feminine Hygiene Products: Available in ship shops and ports, but they tend to be pricier. It’s wise to pack at least a small supply from home.
- Sun Protection: This is a non-negotiable for the Caribbean! Pack plenty of SPF lotion, preferably waterproof for swimming and excursions. Land-based prices are significantly lower than on the ship.
- Basic First Aid & Remedies: Include ibuprofen or acetaminophen for headaches, and bismuth liquid or chewables in case of stomach upset. A small, basic first-aid kit with band-aids and antiseptic wipes is also a good idea.
- Personal Basics: Don’t forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, hairbrush or comb, and any specific hair styling products you can’t live without. Lip balm with SPF is also highly recommended.
Entertainment & Connectivity: Keeping Engaged on Your Journey
While there’s endless entertainment on board, having your own sources of enjoyment can significantly enhance your cruise experience.
Reading Materials
- Books & E-readers: The ship’s library offers a limited selection, usually skewed towards modern best-sellers. If your tastes vary, I highly recommend bringing a fully loaded Kindle or other e-reader with at least six new books from your “to-read” list. The beauty of an e-reader is that whether you pack one book or two hundred, it doesn’t add a single ounce to your luggage! While you can use the ship’s internet to download new books, service can be spotty and costly, so pre-loading is best. You’ll find countless wonderful, quiet nooks on the ship perfect for hours of uninterrupted reading.
- Other Options: Magazines, crossword puzzles, or a journal can also provide relaxing downtime.
Electronics & Connectivity
- Smartphones: Keep your phone on airplane mode to avoid roaming charges. Princess Cruises offers a user-friendly ship intranet/messaging system that allows passengers to communicate with each other on board.
- Chargers & Power Banks: Essential for all your devices. Consider a portable power bank for shore excursions or long days away from your cabin.
- Headphones/Earbuds: Great for listening to music, audiobooks, or watching movies on your device without disturbing others.
- Camera: If your phone camera isn’t sufficient, pack a dedicated camera to capture those stunning Caribbean vistas.
Luggage & Organization: Smart Solutions for Effortless Travel
The right luggage and clever organizational techniques can make all the difference in your cruise experience.
Suitcase Choices
This is largely a matter of personal preference, but my go-to combination is a Samsonite carry-on and its slightly larger sibling. These two bags comfortably accommodate everything I need for any trip and nest perfectly under the bed or in the closet of my stateroom. If I had to choose just one, the carry-on would win every time. Its wheels glide effortlessly over more surfaces than any other suitcase I’ve owned.
My friends and I affectionately call this carry-on “the clown car of luggage” because you can fit an astonishing amount of stuff into it. The second, slightly larger bag provides ample room for any extras and, crucially, for all the wonderful goodies and souvenirs you’ll purchase to bring home. If you anticipate buying many souvenirs, consider tucking a rolled-up collapsible duffle bag into your suitcase when you pack.
Organization Hacks
- Packing Cubes: These are absolute game-changers for keeping your clothes compressed, organized, and easily accessible. Packing cubes streamline unpacking and make it simple to find what you need without rummaging.
- Dirty Laundry Bag: Bring a lightweight, foldable laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separate from clean ones.
- Day Bag/Backpack: A small backpack or tote bag is indispensable for shore excursions, carrying essentials like water, sunscreen, camera, and souvenirs.
Smart Accessories & Handy Gadgets: Elevating Your Cruise Experience
While not strictly necessary, these items can significantly enhance your comfort and convenience on board.
- Walkie Talkies: Extremely helpful when cruising with kids, allowing them to explore while you maintain easy communication. If your children have smartphones, the ship’s intranet system might make these less necessary.
- Dry Laundry Strips: While laundry soap is available for purchase on board, these dry laundry strips are a fantastic alternative. They are TSA-approved, take up minimal space, and can even be used for hand-washing delicates in your cabin sink.
- Powerful Magnets and Hooks: Cruise ship stateroom walls, doors, and ceilings are often magnetic. Magnetic hooks are perfect for hanging sun hats, baseball caps, small bags, or wet swimwear, keeping your cabin tidy and organized. Magnets can also hold daily schedules or important notes.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle. You can refill it at various stations around the ship, reducing plastic waste.
- Ziploc Bags: These are surprisingly versatile. Use them to store wet swimsuits, protect electronics from water, organize small toiletries, or separate dirty clothes.
- Small Portable Fan: If you’re someone who gets warm easily, a small, portable fan can provide extra comfort in your cabin.
- Nightlight: Cabins can be incredibly dark at night. A small nightlight can prevent stubbed toes during late-night bathroom trips.

What NOT to Pack for Your Caribbean Cruise: Travel Lighter, Stress Less
One of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make is overpacking, especially when it comes to certain items you simply won’t need.
Leave These at Home:
- Snacks: It is absolutely, positively pointless to pack snacks when you consider the sheer abundance of food available on Princess Cruises. From deluxe breakfasts delivered to your stateroom, to burgers, pasta, desserts, and a fully stocked salad bar available almost 24 hours a day, to sit-down restaurant-quality dinners – all made fresh, from scratch, daily on board – you do not need to pack a single, solitary food item. Princess Cruises truly has you covered! For a delicious look at food inspired by my time spent on Princess Cruises Caribbean Princess, check out these Mini Pavlova Recipes, Supreme Pizza Salad, Chocolate Tapioca Pudding, Bacon Garlic Rice, and Berry Kombucha Margaritas.

- Pillows: While I admit to being a “pillow maniac” myself and have been known to pack my own from time to time, it’s truly unnecessary on a Princess cruise. The beds and bedding on Princess Cruises are award-winning. As someone awfully picky about beds, I can attest that these, and the luxurious bed linens, are positively wonderful.

- Hair Dryer: Most cruise cabins come equipped with a hairdryer, so you can save space by leaving yours at home.
- Travel Iron: Irons are generally considered a fire hazard and are prohibited on cruise ships. The ship’s laundry services can press your clothes if needed.
- Candles or Incense: Also fire hazards and strictly forbidden.
- Excessive Toiletries: Unless you have specific, irreplaceable brands, the basics are provided, and most common items can be purchased on board or in port.
Final Thoughts: Embrace the Luxury, Pack Smart!
That’s it! You truly don’t need to bring much for a Caribbean cruise because so much luxury and convenience are already built into the onboard experience. From the state-of-the-art gym to the serene spa, diverse eateries, sparkling pools, and engaging entertainment, you could pack the bare essentials and still have an absolutely incredible time.
By following these packing guidelines, you’ll not only save yourself the hassle of lugging unnecessary weight but also ensure you have everything you need to fully enjoy every moment of your Princess Cruises Caribbean adventure. Focus on the relaxation, the exploration, and the unforgettable memories waiting to be made!
