Fathom Impact Travel: A Family’s Transformative Journey to the Dominican Republic
This comprehensive article is the inaugural piece in a series, thoughtfully crafted by our entire family—myself, my husband, and our children—to document our profound experience with Fathom Impact Travel. We journeyed aboard the Adonia to the vibrant Dominican Republic, courtesy of Fathom. While our trip was complimentary, we received no financial compensation for our time or these reflections. It’s important to state upfront that the value of this experience far exceeded any monetary consideration; we would enthusiastically pay for it ourselves and indeed plan to sail with Fathom again as a family in the future.
Escaping the Everyday: Why We Chose Meaningful Travel
In the relentless rhythm of modern life, there are moments when I feel caught on a wildly spinning merry-go-round, longing to throw my feet to the ground and bring everything to an abrupt, jarring halt. As a large family, a certain level of frenetic activity is inherent, yet sometimes, it simply becomes overwhelming. We cherish the dynamism that fills our schedules—from demanding jobs to a whirlwind of five children’s activities, social commitments, family excursions, and more. But amidst this beautiful chaos, a deep yearning for genuine relaxation and meaningful connection often surfaces. When the extraordinary opportunity arose to unplug for a week and embark on a unique voyage with Fathom, Carnival Corporation’s groundbreaking new brand, our response wasn’t just a “yes”—it was an enthusiastic leap of faith.

Beyond the Traditional Cruise: Understanding Fathom’s Unique Approach
Attempting to articulate the profound impact of the Fathom Travel Experience proves uncharacteristically difficult because the most significant experiences often defy simple description. To merely label it a “cruise” is woefully insufficient. While it is true that your journey begins on a cruise ship departing from the Port of Miami, destined for Amber Cove in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, nearly every other facet diverges sharply from what one associates with a conventional cruise. A typical cruise often involves spending a single day in port, perhaps indulging in a bit of shopping, before sailing overnight to the next destination. Fathom, however, revolutionizes this model by dedicating a remarkable three full days in port. This extended stay provides an unparalleled opportunity to venture far beyond the polished confines of the port and cove areas, allowing travelers to authentically experience the Dominican Republic in its true essence: a nation brimming with charm, vibrant colors, infectious energy, and incredibly friendly people. As our gracious Dominican guides and translators reiterated, “We have big challenges, but we have big love!” This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of generosity and resilience that defines the Dominican people.

The Essence of Transformation: Fathom’s Vision of Impact Travel
The single most fitting word to encapsulate our entire experience with Fathom is “transformative.” Tara Russell, the visionary President of Fathom, once wisely remarked, “It’s not easy to do something the world has never seen.” While the path to innovation is undoubtedly challenging, from the very moment we stepped onto the Adonia, it became undeniably clear that Fathom had indeed pioneered a form of impact travel unlike anything the world had witnessed before. It was not just a vacation; it was “love in action,” a journey where personal growth and positive societal contribution were inextricably intertwined. This wasn’t merely a concept; it was transformation embodied in every interaction and every shared moment.
Fostering Connection Through Cohort Groups
At the outset of our Fathom cruise, passengers were thoughtfully assigned to “cohort groups.” These groups served as dynamic units for collective learning and reflection. Together, we participated in enriching classes covering a diverse array of topics, from the art of visual storytelling to practical English tutoring techniques, and immersive sessions on Dominican history, among others. Beyond formal learning, these cohort groups functioned as vital sounding boards. In anticipation of our on-ground impact activities, we discussed goals and expectations. Then, during the return journey, we engaged in profound conversations about the lasting impact these activities had on us personally. The cohort structure offered the invaluable advantage of exposing us to diverse perspectives, enriching our understanding and appreciation of the shared experience.

Engaging with the Community: Our Impact Activities in the Dominican Republic
Our family meticulously selected our impact activities, aiming for a broad spectrum of experiences to share upon our return. For our first full day on the ground in the Dominican Republic, we collectively chose to participate in Community English Tutoring. This activity involved a bus journey to a remote Dominican village, where a local organization skillfully facilitated meetings and paired us with residents. These gracious individuals then warmly escorted us to their homes, where we engaged in conversational English tutoring. Essentially, we simply chatted, building rapport and confidence. Given that a significant portion of the Dominican economy relies on tourism, and many tourists speak English, proficiency in the language is a crucial prerequisite for numerous job opportunities. The time we dedicated to simple conversation and utilizing the provided tutorial materials had the potential to significantly enhance their circumstances, paving the way for material improvement in their lives. This realization alone was truly amazing and deeply moving.
A Parent’s Perspective: Witnessing Transformation in Our Children
From a parent’s vantage point, this experience was particularly eye-opening. Our wonderful Impact Guide, Michelle, had reassured us all with a simple yet powerful message: “Don’t feel under-qualified! Speaking English is all you need to be successful in this.” Despite her encouragement, I admit to a flicker of doubt, wondering how genuinely useful two adults and five children could be in such a short timeframe. My worries, however, proved entirely unfounded. I watched, captivated, as each of my children interacted effortlessly with adults and kids they had never met. The only skills they needed, beyond their inherent ability to speak English, were an open heart and a willingness to help others grasp what they already knew. I witnessed the radiant expressions on my children’s faces as they bravely ventured beyond the borders of their comfort zones, guiding an adult through the pronunciation of “Hello. My name is…” and then erupting in shared cheers when the phrase was perfectly articulated. And when they had covered the requested tutorial materials, what happened next was truly magical: the adults, in turn, helped my kids learn the equivalent phrases in Spanish. Let me tell you, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve seen your children selflessly help others and then, in that very process, experience the profound realization that they themselves have learned something invaluable. It’s a moment of reciprocal learning and connection that stays with you forever.
As the tutoring session concluded, we all walked back together from the participants’ homes to the community center. One of the village matriarchs linked her arm through mine, leaning gently as we walked. I pointed to the passing signs, earnestly attempting to decipher their meaning. We burst into hysterical laughter upon realizing I had absolutely no idea what the signs said or what she was attempting to convey, but she simply patted my arm and smiled at me with warm indulgence. At the community center, skilled translators facilitated an open and heartfelt discussion, allowing us to freely share our experiences and reflections with each other, deepening our collective understanding and appreciation.

My 16-year-old son received a powerful bear-hug from Doris, one of the residents. She then pulled back, made the sign of the cross over his heart, blessed him, and pulled him down to kiss his cheek. My son beamed, clearly touched by the genuine affection. My 10, 12, and 14-year-olds cheered and exchanged enthusiastic fist-bumps with ladies who greeted them with warm smiles, saying, “It’s nice to meet you! How are you today?” These wonderful women continued to bestow hugs upon my boys, tousling their hair and exclaiming, “¡Qué lindo!” (How handsome!). I could feel the palpable love emanating from the residents towards my sons. Even without speaking Spanish, I understood it was a term of profound endearment and appreciation, a clear embodiment of connection and “love in action.”

By the time we returned to the ship, my 18-year-old had already received a Facebook friend request from one of the ladies he had tutored. She left a heartfelt message on his wall that read: “the 19th of April will be forgotten, I will never forget your presence in our lives, you’re a special kid. Really. We love you so much, kisses…….” This powerful testament truly illustrates the transformative nature of these interactions, not just for the community members, but for our own family as well. It’s a vivid example of genuine “love in action” creating lasting bonds.

The Reforestation Project: Contributing to Environmental Sustainability
The following day, our family embarked on separate impactful endeavors. My husband, along with our four eldest boys, dedicated their time to a vital reforestation project. Their inspiring story of contributing to environmental sustainability and community well-being in the Dominican Republic will be eloquently shared in his own words in a subsequent post, highlighting another facet of Fathom’s diverse impact activities.

From Cacao to Connection: The Chocal Cooperative Experience
Meanwhile, my youngest child and I joined forces for another enriching experience: helping to make chocolate at a women’s cacao cooperative known as “Chocal.” As we delved into the cooperative’s inspiring history, I was filled with immense gratitude. I felt profoundly thankful that in my own life, I had never faced the heartbreaking necessity of leaving my home for weeks on end, entrusting my children’s well-being to kind neighbors, simply to earn enough to make ends meet. I was absolutely thrilled to discover how these remarkable women had channeled their ingenuity and resilience to devise a powerful solution to this very challenge. By engaging local cacao farmers and establishing their own factory, they now produce exquisite products that are widely sold throughout the Dominican Republic, creating sustainable livelihoods for their families. The moment we met the CEO of this women’s cooperative, her story resonated deeply. She explained how she had left school at a young age after starting her family, but through her empowering work at Chocal, she felt inspired not only to complete her high school degree but to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree, and was currently working diligently towards her Master’s of Business Administration. I was utterly blown away by her determination and vision. These women now enjoy the privilege of having their families live right alongside their workplace, providing a stable income, and further extending this opportunity by hiring their own children, who in turn can support their young families. During our visit, we actively participated in sorting cacao beans, sifting roasted cacao, and meticulously packaging candy bars for sale. Throughout our time at Chocal, we laughed, we learned about their ambitious goals, we forged new friendships, and we collaborated with fellow Fathom passengers from all corners of the globe. They expressed that our efforts significantly increased their productivity for the day, thereby enhancing their earning power. Did we truly make that much of a difference? I certainly hope so. What I know with absolute certainty, however, is that I will never again take a chocolate bar for granted. This entire experience was a testament to “love in action” and true transformation, highlighting the profound impact of collective effort and empowering women.
While our primary mission was to immerse ourselves in the Dominican culture and make a tangible difference, let there be no mistake: WE were the ones who departed profoundly changed.

Amber Cove: Relaxation and Lasting Impressions
For our final half-day in port, we decided to embrace spontaneity. We indulged in blissful relaxation by the lazy river pool at Amber Cove, enjoying the company of new friends our family had made aboard the ship. The kids reveled in an unlimited zipline package, experiencing exhilarating thrills. Meanwhile, my husband and I savored some truly exquisite iced coffee from the Cafè el Cibao in the vibrant shopping area. As our family strolled back down the pier, heading towards the ship preparing for its return journey to Miami, we were all in unanimous agreement: despite having spent nearly three full days immersed in port, we felt no desire to depart. The captivating colors, the evocative sights, the rhythmic sounds, the enticing smells, and above all, the wonderfully warm people of the Dominican Republic had utterly enchanted us. My husband and I even confessed to eyeing the “for sale” signs on local homes, entertaining wild, fleeting fantasies of shedding it all and relocating to the DR. This final day of leisure felt earned, and it cemented our deep affection for this remarkable country.

Life Aboard the Adonia: A Refreshingly Different Cruise Experience
I would be remiss if I didn’t dedicate time to describing the unique shipboard life on the Adonia, as this is yet another area where Fathom distinguishes itself dramatically from the “normal” cruise experience. I have never encountered another cruise where the staff so comfortably and genuinely interacts with the passengers. It was commonplace to see crew members enjoying lunch in the buffet area alongside passengers, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie rather than separation. My children, of course, played ping pong with other passengers, but they also enthusiastically engaged with the Impact Guides and other crew members. If you’ve cruised even once or twice, you’ll immediately recognize how refreshingly unusual this is. The proverbial “third wall” that often separates cruise ship staff and passengers on so many other voyages simply doesn’t exist on Fathom. Simultaneously, the staff maintains an impeccable level of professionalism and knowledge, always going above and beyond to ensure your time with Fathom is nothing short of extraordinary. This seamless integration of staff and passengers truly epitomizes the “love in action” and holistic transformation that defines the Fathom journey, extending the meaningful connections from shore to ship.
