An Unforgettable Culinary Journey: My King Arthur Flour Blog & Bake Experience
Last week, my lifelong passion for baking reached a new pinnacle when I received an invitation that truly made my heart sing: an exclusive spot at the third annual Blog & Bake™ conference, hosted at the prestigious King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center. This wasn’t just an event; it was a three-day immersion into pure baking heaven, a dream come true for anyone who cherishes the art of bread-making, pastry, and all things flour. My sincere gratitude goes out to Allison Furbish and the entire dedicated team at King Arthur Flour for orchestrating such an incredible and enriching experience.
Consider yourself forewarned: I am about to embark on an enthusiastic deep dive into this adventure, embracing my inner fan-girl with unbridled joy. For those who follow my culinary escapades, you’re likely already aware of my profound love for baking. It’s more than just a hobby; it’s my personal art form, a source of solace, an emotional outlet, and a heartfelt expression of affection that has been with me since childhood. Whether I’m brimming with happiness, overwhelmed by love, consumed by worry, bubbling with excitement, battling nerves, feeling melancholic, utterly perplexed, or simply ecstatic – my response is almost always to bake. It’s my universal language, a way to connect and express.
Life, in its beautiful complexity, has offered countless opportunities to indulge this passion. Through the years, I’ve experimented with a myriad of flours, each promising unique qualities. However, a pivotal decision was made early in my serious pursuit of baking excellence: to exclusively use King Arthur Flour. The reasons behind this unwavering loyalty are manifold, and I promise to delve into them in detail in an upcoming post. For now, let me convey the sheer exhilaration I felt upon receiving that coveted invitation to King Arthur Flour’s annual Blog & Bake™ event.
My Deep-Rooted Connection to King Arthur Flour
For what feels like an eternity, I’ve eagerly anticipated the arrival of The Baker’s Catalogue – an award-winning publication from King Arthur Flour that beautifully blends tested recipes with a curated selection of merchandise. Each edition is thoroughly absorbed, not just for the innovative and reliably delicious recipes it contains, but also for the pure joy of ‘window shopping’ through its pages. My stepmom, equally devoted to the craft, faithfully subscribed to ‘The Baking Sheet,’ their invaluable bi-monthly baking newsletter. Countless cherished ‘special-occasion’ family recipes, those that evoke warmth and nostalgia, trace their origins back to one of these two trusted King Arthur Flour resources.
It was through these publications that I first learned about King Arthur Flour’s comprehensive classes offered at their Baking Education Center. From aspiring young bakers to seasoned master-level professionals, their curriculum catered to everyone. The knowledge that such unparalleled expertise was accessible fueled a deep desire within me to attend a class. I longed to immerse myself in their renowned teaching, to witness masters at work, and to absorb their wisdom firsthand. Given this long-held aspiration, is it any surprise that I enthusiastically embraced the Blog & Bake™ invitation? It wasn’t just an event; it was the realization of a long-standing baking dream.
*Note: ‘The Baking Sheet’ is now available in a comprehensive digital format, offering access to every single recipe ever published since its inception in 1990—over 3500 recipes—at your fingertips for just $21.95 per year. For an additional $5 annually, you can enjoy both the digital and a print copy delivered right to your door!
The Blog & Bake™ Experience: Beyond the Oven
The Blog & Bake™ event unfolded over three incredible days, designed to offer a multifaceted learning experience. It was an unparalleled opportunity to master some of King Arthur Flour’s most versatile recipes, taught by their exceptional baking educators. Beyond the classroom, it provided a unique chance to connect with the dedicated employee-owners whose passion truly defines the company’s special culture. Furthermore, the event fostered a vibrant community, allowing me to network and share experiences with a wonderfully talented group of fellow food bloggers, all united by a common love for baking.
From Farm to Table: Discovering Norwich, Vermont’s Agricultural Heart
Our journey into the heart of Vermont’s culinary landscape began with a captivating tour of two local farms instrumental in the region’s burgeoning farm-to-table movement: Hogwash Farm and Killdeer Farm, both charmingly named and equally impressive in their commitment to sustainable practices.
Behold! The adorable “baby bacon” at Hogwash Farm:

And their slightly older counterparts, indulging in day-old baguettes generously provided by King Arthur Flour’s own bakery—a testament to the circular economy and local partnerships:

We also encountered the striking Jacob’s sheep at Hogwash Farm. Did you know these fascinating creatures can grow up to seven horns? Their unique appearance added another layer of charm to our farm visit:

At Killdeer Farm, I was moments away from face-planting into a vibrant bed of baby lettuces. My gardening philosophy, you see, often involves an immediate desire to consume the fresh produce on sight! If only there had been a bottle of balsamic vinegar handy, I might have simply started grazing right there.

Jake Guest, the visionary owner of Killdeer Farms, captivated me with his innovative approach to pest control, utilizing beneficial insects to manage harmful ones. It was like witnessing a miniature army of “insect ninjas” at work, a truly sustainable and fascinating aspect of modern farming.

The Art of Cheese: A Deep Dive with Cabot Cheese
Our journey continued with an enlightening presentation from King Arthur Flour’s esteemed partners at Cabot Cheese. A passionate Farmer Spokesperson from Cabot eloquently articulated the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture and community well-being. It was clear that these Cabot farmers are not just producers; they are stewards of the land, driven by a profound dedication to their craft and the environment.

Following this insightful discussion, we were treated to a rare demonstration by a true Cheddar Master and Cheese Grader. This expert guided us through the intricate process of evaluating Cabot’s renowned Cheddar cheeses, explaining the subtle nuances of flavor, texture, and aroma that define quality. The highlight was, of course, a delightful Cheddar tasting, where we savored the rich complexities of their award-winning products.

To cap off this exceptional culinary segment, Cabot’s talented Chef prepared a truly fabulous meal for us, showcasing the versatility and deliciousness of their cheeses in expertly crafted dishes.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Cabot also brought a friend from Harpoon Brewery, who supplied us with an array of very tasty local brews, perfectly complementing the rich flavors of the cheese and the meal.
Artistry in Glass and Plate: The Simon Pearce Experience
Our culinary and artistic explorations continued with a memorable evening at the Simon Pearce Restaurant and Glass Shop. We were privileged to witness a captivating cooking demonstration by Chef Jarod Rockwell, who also serves as the General Manager and Chef of the esteemed restaurant. His skill and passion were evident as he prepared our dinner.
Chef Jarod presented the exquisite meal he had prepared. One could almost forgive him for a hint of nervousness; after all, he was facing a room full of eager food bloggers, standing by with hungry expressions and forks poised!

And could you blame us for our anticipation? The dish, Herbed Chicken on Spaetzle with Tomato Chutney, was a masterpiece of flavors and presentation, a testament to Chef Rockwell’s culinary prowess.

Beyond the gastronomic delights, we were also granted a rare glimpse into the mesmerizing world of glassblowing. Simon Pearce’s incredibly skilled and focused artisans demonstrated their craft, transforming molten glass into their signature elegant wine glasses and delicate Christmas trees. The precision, heat, and artistry involved were truly mind-bending to behold.

At the Heart of It All: The King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center
While every aspect of the trip was enriching, the undeniable highlights were the comprehensive tour of King Arthur Flour’s state-of-the-art facilities and, of course, the immersive group baking classes. These sessions truly exemplified KAF’s dedication to baking excellence and education. Chef Susan Reid, a celebrated authority in the baking world, and her expert team conducted a fascinating “muffin comparison” demonstration. They meticulously baked roughly a billion muffins (or so it felt!), allowing us to witness firsthand how King Arthur Flours perform against each other, highlighting the subtle differences, and crucially, how they stand head and shoulders above competitor brands. It was a powerful testament to the consistent quality and superior results that KAF flours consistently deliver.
Our hands-on learning was guided by an incredible roster of Chef Instructors: Amber Eisler, Jessica Meyers, Robyn Sargent, and Susan Miller. Each brought their unique expertise and infectious enthusiasm, leading us through a diverse array of baking fundamentals and advanced techniques. We learned the secrets to crafting perfect pizza dough, culminating in the unparalleled experience of baking wood-fired, brick-oven pizza – truly a dream come true for any pizza enthusiast! We delved into the foundational basics of bread baking, understanding the science and artistry behind a perfect loaf. The instructors demystified the process of creating the ultimate flaky pie crust, and introduced us to the marvelously efficient “blitz puff pastry,” a quick and tasty shortcut to impressive pastry creations. I am beyond excited to share these incredible recipes and techniques with you in future posts. For now, feast your eyes on a sneak peek into the magic that unfolded in those kitchens…

Feeling Inspired? Let’s Bake!
Does hearing about these incredible experiences ignite a desire within you to bake some bread? If so, I absolutely understand! I returned from this trip so profoundly enthused about baking that I immediately channeled that inspiration into my kitchen. In the very next week, I baked no less than ten loaves of bread and crafted homemade pizza for my family. The educational center’s influence was undeniable, and I’m already eagerly planning a return trip, hoping to attend another class with my sisters and brothers, sharing this wonderful learning opportunity with my loved ones.
As a direct result of the incredible time spent at King Arthur Flour, I’ve developed a new recipe that I simply cannot wait to share with you. Tomorrow, I will be unveiling my recipe for a Roasted Garlic Rustic Sourdough Boule. Trust me when I say, it is every bit as sensational as it sounds. Be sure to come back! After all, great bread, much like great experiences, is truly meant to be shared!
