Discovering Cornell University’s Culinary Gem: The Story Behind Julio Sauce
Our journey to Cornell University was more than just a family visit; it was an immersive experience into the academic world and a delightful culinary discovery that left an indelible mark on our taste buds. As I mentioned previously in my Cuban Sandwiches post, my mom, affectionately known as Free Range Nana, my sister Jessamine, and I embarked on this memorable trip to see my youngest sister, Airlia. Little did we know, this trip would introduce us to an iconic college food truck staple: Julio Sauce.

A Glimpse into Genius: Airlia, the Cornell Physics Whiz
What I might not have fully conveyed in that earlier post is the sheer brilliance of my sister, Airlia. She isn’t just a sister; she’s a bona fide brainiac. For those who need proof, behold this image of her standing proudly outside one of the buildings where she dedicates countless hours to her studies and research. This imposing structure is essentially her second home.

That’s right, folks. My sister is a PHYSICS major at the prestigious Cornell University, delving into the intricate world of nanoscale science. Her current project involves building a machine capable of reducing light to its most fundamental state, making it visible only as a mere particle. Need another testament to her extraordinary intellect? This image captures a whiteboard filled with calculations—the kind of complex equations she tackles for fun during her free time.
I took this picture, understanding precisely nothing on that board except the word “torque.” For some whimsical reason, the word “torque” has always tickled my funny bone. Anyone else out there have words that just make them inexplicably laugh? No? Just me? I’ll carry on.
The crucial point here is this: Airlia spends her precious free time in the LAB. Contrast that with my own college days, and let’s just say it’s probably best we don’t delve into how I chose to spend my leisure hours. The differences are, shall we say, stark.
Exploring Cornell’s Iconic Campus: A Journey Up and Down the Slopes
Airlia graciously took us on an extensive tour of the Cornell campus, and I mean truly extensive. We traversed its iconic slopes—up the slope, down the slope, and then, for good measure, up another slope. Our adventure included climbing the one hundred and sixty-one steps into the majestic clock tower to witness a chimes concert, a truly unique Cornell tradition. We also explored several of the university’s impressive libraries, each a sanctuary of knowledge and history.

Walking through “The Stacks” in one of Cornell’s libraries filled me with an unexpected warmth and fuzzy feeling, a sense of intellectual reverence. That feeling, however, was momentarily shattered when Free Range Nana and Airlia nearly got us all ejected for uncontrollable giggling. My own contribution to the potential expulsion involved sloshing a cup full of ice water as I attempted to walk ever so silently, having just read the enormous “SHHHHHHHHHH” sign. Needless to say, I failed spectacularly at subtlety.

As we continued our library exploration, a whimsical thought crossed my mind: “Don’t blink. The angels have the library…” Come on, there has to be at least one fellow Doctor Who enthusiast among my readers who appreciates that reference!

In a surprising turn of events, Jessamine, usually the instigator of mischief, behaved like an absolute saint in the library. She appeared downright beatified in her serene demeanor.

However, once we exited the hallowed halls of academia, all bets were off. I genuinely cannot recount what she was saying in this particular moment; it was most certainly not ‘G’ rated. It seems she had taken her “naughty vitamins” before leaving home that day.

Despite the occasional antics, my love for my sisters is immeasurable. Our time together, filled with laughter and exploration, truly strengthened our bond.
A Culinary Revelation: The Legend of Julio Fries from Louie’s Lunch
During our campus exploration, Airlia led us to her favorite study spots, including a study hall in her old dorm. From there, she casually pointed through the trees, revealing a campus landmark. “That’s where I get Julio fries,” she remarked, as if everyone inherently knew what she meant.
“Julio-whats?” I asked, utterly intrigued.
“Julio fries. They’re simply fries tossed with Frank’s Red Hot and oregano.”
Go on, seriously? My ears perked up instantly. Are you all aware of my almost obsessive fixation with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce? If not, let me clarify: at this point in my life, I should probably own a considerable amount of stock in the company. It may not be the spiciest or the most gourmet hot sauce on the market, but it’s akin to your most reliable best friend. You always know it’s there, and you can trust it implicitly to deliver exactly what you expect.
Knowing this, you can imagine I quickly beat a path down to Louie’s Lunch truck, attempting to appear as nonchalant as possible so as not to embarrass my brilliant rocket scientist little sister. The last thing I wanted was for her to be forever associated with the crazy woman who sprinted down the hill in impractical high boots, only to stand panting at the window of Louie’s Lunch. So, I maintained my chill persona, opting for a dignified run-walk rather than an undignified sprint.
The Genius Behind the Sauce: Louie’s Lunch at Cornell
These legendary Julio Fries are the brainchild of Louie’s Lunch truck, a beloved institution on Cornell’s main campus. Louie, whoever he may be, was an absolute genius. Frank’s Red Hot is a vinegar-based hot sauce, and vinegar, as any potato connoisseur knows, is a perfect pairing for fries, right? So, hot vinegar? Hubba hubba! And while I don’t know the exact reasoning behind incorporating oregano, I am incredibly grateful that he did, because, holy moly, it’s a revelation.
I always thought Frank’s Red Hot was excellent on its own, but the addition of oregano elevates it to an entirely new dimension. It’s the flavor component I didn’t even realize was missing, transforming a simple hot sauce into something extraordinary. This innovative blend creates a harmonious balance of tangy, spicy, and earthy notes that is truly addictive.
Airlia, ever the knowledgeable guide, even demonstrated the proper Julio fries eating technique. Yes, she was “down by the school yard.” Help me out here, people. Tell me someone else is a Paul Simon fan and got that reference!

Recreating the Cornell Experience at Home: Our Own Julio Sauce and Julio Tots
At least Airlia still thinks I’m funny. And while I may not be a nanoparticle scientist, my little sister also believes I’m pretty smart, especially after I proudly informed her that as soon as I returned home, I immediately set to work. My mission: to crack the code and figure out the perfect ratio for crafting our very own homemade Julio Sauce. The moment I succeeded, I promptly doused a massive batch of crispy tater tots with my newly concocted sauce. She actually called me brilliant, which, coming from a Cornell physics major, is high praise indeed!
I’m going to luxuriate in that compliment for a moment or two. Okay, perhaps I’ll luxuriate in that with the aid of some delicious Julio tots…

In the true spirit of scientific inquiry—feeling utterly inspired by our visit to Cornell—I conducted a small experiment with my homemade Julio Sauce and the tots. One bowl contained tots that were pre-doused, soaking up all that incredible flavor. The other bowl featured “naked” tots, served alongside a generous bowl of Julio Sauce for dipping. This allowed us to determine the optimal way to enjoy this delectable treat.

We approached the tasting with very serious expressions, sampling the pre-doused tots first, then moving on to dip the “naked” ones. The unanimous consensus was clear: we preferred dipping the tots rather than pre-soaking them. This method ensured they remained wonderfully crispy, retaining their satisfying crunch with every bite. Hey Louie! Sauce on the side – is it an option for those of us who prioritize crispiness?

God love Louie and his incredible sauce. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest combinations create the most unforgettable flavors.
Go ahead and make yourself some Julio Sauce. It’s truly what smart people eat, and it brings a piece of that unique Cornell food truck culture right into your home. This versatile sauce isn’t just for fries and tots; imagine it on baked potatoes, homemade potato wedges, or even as a zesty marinade. The possibilities are endless!

Cornell University Food Truck Style: Homemade Julio Sauce
Rebecca Lindamood
Julio Sauce is my homemade version of the famous Cornell University dish, Julio Fries, served by Louie’s Lunch. This vibrant, vinegar-based hot sauce infused with aromatic oregano adds an incredible burst of flavor to any potato dish. While it’s perfect for fries, we’ve found it absolutely fantastic on tater tots, crispy home fries, and even as a lively topping for baked potatoes. What will you discover to douse with your homemade Julio Sauce?
Ingredients
For Julio Sauce:
- 3/4 cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
- 1 heaping tablespoon dry oregano leaves
For Julio Tots:
- 1 bag frozen tater tots
Instructions
To Make the Julio Sauce:
-
Add the Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and the heaping tablespoon of dry oregano leaves to a container equipped with a tight-fitting lid. Ensure the lid is securely fastened in place and shake vigorously to thoroughly combine the ingredients. Once prepared, store your homemade Julio Sauce in the refrigerator, where it will maintain its delicious flavor for up to three months.
To Make Julio Tots:
-
Prepare your frozen tater tots according to the package instructions, but with one crucial modification: ensure you cook them long enough to achieve terminal crispiness. We’re talking super crunchy, tots that make a satisfying noise when you bite into them. The extra crispiness is key to the perfect Julio Tot experience.
-
Once the tots are hot and delightfully crunchy, transfer them into a serving bowl. At this point, you have two delicious options: either serve them with a generous side of Julio Sauce for dipping, allowing each person to customize their sauce level and maintain maximum crispiness, or, for a softer, fully flavored dish, pour the Julio Sauce directly over the tots and toss to coat.
